About River City Ransom
River City Ransom came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by Techn?s Japan. It was part of that wave of games that took familiar arcade brawlers and gave them more depth for home consoles. You could tell it was from the same people who made the Kunio-kun games, but it felt right at home on the SNES.
You control Alex or Ryan, two high school students fighting through the city's gangs to rescue Ryan's girlfriend, Cyndi. The game plays out screen by screen; you explore the city, enter schools and malls, and beat up endless waves of thugs. What set it apart was the RPG layer. You collect money from defeated enemies to buy food and books from shops, which permanently raise your stats and teach you new special moves like the Dragon Feet or Grand Slam. The pacing is deliberate, as you often need to grind a bit to afford the best items before tackling the next boss. It feels like a brawler that rewards patience and strategy, not just quick reflexes.
