River City Ransom on SNES is one of those beat 'em ups that just feels right—like a mix of street brawling and RPG leveling, but with that classic NES charm. You pick between Alex or Ryan (or a friend for co-op), then punch, kick, and suplex your way through gangs of delinquents to rescue your kidnapped girlfriend. The controls are simple, but there’s depth in the way you can upgrade stats by eating burgers or buying new moves from dojos.
What I love is how chaotic it gets—you’ll knock enemies into trash cans, loot their pockets for cash, and occasionally find a baseball bat to swing around. The dialogue’s full of goofy Engrish ("BARF!"), and the pixel art has this rough, energetic style. It’s not as polished as later SNES brawlers, but that’s part of its scrappy appeal. If you’ve ever wanted to power up by chugging a bento box mid-fight, this is your game.
