Rival Turf is one of those SNES beat 'em ups that feels like it was made for late-night couch co-op. You pick between two street brawlers—Jack or Oozie—and immediately get thrown into some grimy back alleys full of guys who really don’t want you there. The first level’s got this great energy: trash cans flying, punches landing with that satisfying SNES crunch, and enemies who somehow think jumping at you from off-screen is a solid strategy.

It’s simple but fun—you’ve got your basic punches, a jump kick that’s way too useful, and this hilarious spinning piledriver move that looks ridiculous but clears a crowd fast. The two-player mode is where it shines, though. My buddy and I used to argue over who got to be Oozie (his hair is objectively cooler) while we plowed through waves of neon-clad goons.

Yeah, it’s not as deep as Final Fight, and some of the later levels get cheap with enemy spam, but there’s something about the chunky sprites and that over-the-top "crime syndicate" story that just works. If you’ve got a friend and 20 minutes to spare, it’s a solid throwback brawler.
