Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, a time when developers were trying all sorts of ideas on the platform. It was published by Raya Systems, a company known for a few educational and health related titles. This one definitely stood out from the typical platformers and RPGs of the era by taking you inside the human body.
You control Rex Ronan, a surgeon who is miniaturized to enter a patient's body and fight a tar and nicotine monster. The main objective is to navigate through various bodily systems, destroying the monster and cleaning up the damage it causes. The gameplay involves screen by screen exploration of organs and vessels, using a laser scalpel to zap enemies and clear blockages. You also collect health power ups and avoid environmental hazards like white blood cells. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty comes from managing your limited health while dealing with persistent enemies. It feels like a strange, tense cleanup mission in a place you were never meant to be.
