RPG Tsukuru - Super Dante is one of those obscure Super Famicom gems that never made it outside Japan. It's part of the RPG Tsukuru series, which basically means "RPG Maker" – but don't expect modern creation tools. This one's got a weirdly specific Dante theme (as in Divine Comedy Dante), with hellish landscapes and some surprisingly moody sprite work for a SNES game.
What's cool is that it was later adapted for Satellaview, Nintendo's weird satellite broadcast gaming service. The gameplay's pretty standard JRPG stuff at first glance, but there's this odd charm to how it all comes together – like someone's first attempt at making their own Final Fantasy clone, complete with random battles and overworld exploration. The enemy designs are where it shines though – some of these demon sprites actually look unsettling.
If you're into digging up forgotten 16-bit curiosities, this one's worth a look just for the bizarre premise alone.
