Primal Rage came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995, a port of the Atari Games arcade fighter. It was part of that wave of fighting games trying to find a spot after Street Fighter II, but it stood out because you weren't playing as a martial artist; you were a giant, prehistoric monster. The SNES version had to scale things back a bit from the arcade, but it still captured the core idea of colossal creatures duking it out.

You control one of several giant beasts, like a fiery ape or a two headed lizard, and your goal is to defeat the other monsters to become the god of a primitive world. The fighting is familiar if you know the genre, with special moves executed by specific joystick motions and button presses. The unique hooks are the fatalities, called "human sacrifices," where you can eat worshipers for health, and the fact that you can sometimes punch your opponent clean off the screen into a new area. The pacing is slower and heavier than many fighters, making your attacks feel weighty and destructive. It feels like a messy, chaotic brawl between gods, where every landed blow shakes the ground.
