Primal Rage came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed by Atari Games. It was part of that wave of fighting games trying to capture some of the arcade energy at home, a time when every console seemed to need its own roster of combatants. This one stood out immediately because of its cast; you weren't playing as martial artists, but as giant, prehistoric monsters.

You control one of these massive beasts, like a fiery gorilla or a two-headed lizard, battling another monster across various primitive landscapes. The main objective is to deplete your opponent's life bar using a combination of basic attacks and special moves, often involving projectiles or area-of-effect strikes. A couple of its signature mechanics were the ability to eat defeated human worshippers that ran across the screen to regain health, and the fatality-like finishing moves you could perform at the end of a match. The pacing felt a bit slower and heavier compared to something like Street Fighter, with an emphasis on powerful, deliberate strikes. It was a straightforward, chaotic brawl that felt satisfyingly destructive to play.
