About Power Instinct
I picked up Power Instinct for the Super Nintendo back in 1993, a release from Atlus. It was one of many fighting games trying to find a place on the system during that era, a time when the genre was exploding in arcades and making its way into living rooms. The box art and the promise of a new challenger were enough to get me to pop the cartridge in.
You control one of several eccentric characters, each with their own strange fighting style, and your goal is to win a tournament. The game has a few distinct mechanics, like the ability to transform into a more powerful version of your fighter after winning a round, which can completely shift the momentum of a match. There is also a family system where characters are grouped, and defeating a relative unlocks their moves for your use. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially against the final bosses. Playing it feels like a chaotic scramble where a single special move can decide everything.
