Pokémon Priti Ruby: Johto Starters is a GBA romhack that throws you right into the Hoenn region—but with a twist. Instead of the usual Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip, you get to pick from Johto’s classics: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile. I went with Cyndaquil because, well, fire types are always a solid pick, right?

The game keeps the core Ruby experience but tweaks encounters and dialogue to fit the Johto starters. Early battles feel familiar but fresh—you’ll run into different wild Pokémon than usual, and trainers actually acknowledge your unusual starter. The sprite work is clean, and the pacing doesn’t drag. If you’ve played Ruby to death but want a little shake-up, this one’s a fun detour.

Just don’t expect a full Johto remake—it’s Hoenn with Johto’s starters leading the charge.
