I first played Golden Sun on the Game Boy Advance back in 2001. It was developed by Camelot and published by Nintendo. At the time, the GBA library was filling out with many different kinds of games, and this one stood out as a solid, traditional role playing game. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it executed its ideas with a lot of polish.

You control a group of young adepts, led by Isaac, as they travel across the world of Weyard. Your main goal is to prevent the ancient power of Alchemy from being unleashed, a task that involves a long journey through towns, caves, and overworld maps. A key part of the game is using psychic abilities called Psynergy outside of battle to solve puzzles; you might move a large stone block to create a bridge or make a vine grow to reach a higher ledge. The turn based combat is straightforward, but it's deepened by collecting and equipping elemental creatures called Djinn, which can change your character's class and summon powerful attacks. The game has a steady pace, with dungeons that require thoughtful navigation, and the difficulty feels fair, with challenging boss fights that test your party setup. Moving through its world, solving environmental puzzles, and building your team provides a consistent and satisfying sense of progress.
