Pokemon Altair is a Game Boy Advance title from 2004, a time when the handheld was full of ambitious fan projects. It was developed by a small, independent team, not an official Nintendo studio, which gave it a distinct feel right from the start. You control a young trainer exploring the new Selnar region, tasked with filling your Pokedex and challenging the local gym leaders. The game introduces a day and night cycle that affects which Pokemon appear in the tall grass, so you have to revisit areas at different times to complete your collection. Dungeons are more puzzle focused than in the main series, often requiring you to use specific HMs outside of battle to progress. The pacing is deliberate, and some of the trainer battles can be surprisingly difficult, demanding careful type matchups and team composition. Wandering through the world with these new twists makes the familiar act of catching them all feel fresh and engaging.
