Pocky & Rocky came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Natsume. It was part of that wave of early 90s SNES games that took simple, clear concepts and polished them until they shone.

You control either Pocky, a shrine maiden, or her raccoon companion Rocky, fighting through screen by screen. Your main goal is to clear each area of enemies and survive the boss waiting at the end. You attack by throwing ofuda talismans or firing projectiles, and a key mechanic is your slide move, which lets you dodge attacks and pass through enemies. You also collect power-ups that change your shot type and increase your range. The pacing is fast, and the game is quite difficult, with enemies swarming from all directions. Playing it feels like a constant, tense dance of shooting and evading.
