Pocky & Rocky 2 came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed by Natsume. It was part of that wave of action games that really pushed the SNES hardware, with detailed sprites and colorful settings. You control either Pocky, a shrine maiden, or her raccoon dog partner Rocky, clearing the Japanese countryside of yokai and other monsters. The main goal is to fight through a series of themed stages, from forests to haunted castles, defeating a boss at the end of each one. Your primary actions are shooting projectiles and using a close-range swipe attack to deflect enemy shots. You explore screen by screen; each area locks you in until you defeat all the enemies, which keeps the action contained and intense. The game is known for its difficulty, with swarms of enemies and patterns that require quick reflexes. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic dance between attacking and dodging.
