Pocky & Rocky is one of those SNES gems that feels like a fever dream from feudal Japan. You play as either Pocky, a shrine maiden, or her tanuki buddy Rocky—both trying to stop a bunch of yōkai that’ve gone nuts thanks to some creepy force called Black Mantle. The first level throws you right into it: dodging waves of kappas and floating ghost heads while your character slides around like they’re on ice (in a good way).
What’s cool is how chaotic it gets—enemies come from all sides, and you’re constantly weaving between projectiles, tossing talismans or Rocky’s leaves like your life depends on it (because it does). The art’s got this weirdly charming mix of cute and eerie, like someone took a bunch of Japanese folklore and cranked the weirdness up just enough. Also, no matter who you pick, the story plays out the same, so don’t stress over the choice—just go with whoever’s attack feels better. By the time you hit the boss rush at the end, you’ll either love the madness or swear off tanukis forever.
