Phantom 2040 on SNES is one of those underrated action gems—you play as the Phantom, a masked hero in a cyberpunk-ish future where everything’s gone to hell. The vibe’s a mix of Blade Runner and classic comic book action, with some surprisingly deep platforming and combat for a 16-bit game.

Right off the bat, you’ve got this grappling hook that feels way ahead of its time—swinging around crumbling skyscrapers, dodging drones, and taking down corporate goons. The levels are huge, too, with branching paths that actually change the story. First time I played, I got lost in the sewers for way too long before realizing I could just climb up a vent instead.

It’s got that ‘90s anime aesthetic, all moody neon and synth music, and the controls are tight once you get used to them. Definitely worth a shot if you’re into Metroidvania-style exploration with a side of dystopian revenge.
