About Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (europe)
Phalanx came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, published by Kemco. It was one of many shooters on the system, but it stood out immediately because of its strange box art featuring an old man with a banjo. The game itself is a horizontal shooter where you pilot the Enforce Fighter A-144, a ship tasked with stopping an alien invasion. It fits right into that early 90s SNES era where developers were experimenting with the hardware to create expansive, detailed worlds.
You control the A-144 fighter, navigating through levels filled with enemy ships, ground installations, and large bosses. Your main goal is to survive each stage, destroy everything in your path, and defeat the boss waiting at the end. The game uses a screen by screen progression system; you clear one section of enemies before the screen scrolls automatically to the next combat area. You collect power-ups to upgrade your main weapon and a separate sub-weapon, like homing missiles or wide shots, which adds a layer of strategy. The pacing is methodical, not frantic, and the difficulty can be punishing, demanding careful movement and smart weapon choices. Playing it feels like a deliberate, tactical fight for survival where every shot and power-up matters.
