Parodius Da! - Shinwa Kara Owarai E came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, a Konami release that fit right into the platform's library of vibrant, often eccentric games. It was a time when side-scrolling shooters were common, but this one stood apart by not taking itself seriously at all.
You pilot one of four selectable ships, including the familiar Vic Viper from Gradius or the penguin Pentarou, each with a distinct set of weapons. Your goal is to survive through horizontally scrolling stages, shooting a bizarre menagerie of enemies like a cat-shaped battleship or a dancing showgirl. You collect power-up bells that cycle through various enhancements, from speed boosts to new offensive options like lasers and missiles, and you can also deploy options, small orbiting drones that multiply your firepower. The pacing is fast and the challenge can be steep, with screen-filling bosses and dense enemy patterns demanding quick reflexes. It feels chaotic and absurd in the best way, a shooter that constantly surprises you with its humor and inventiveness.
