About Panel De Pon
I first played Panel De Pon on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1995. It was developed by Intelligent Systems, the same team that worked on Fire Emblem, and it arrived late in the SNES lifecycle. This was a time when puzzle games were really finding their footing on consoles, moving beyond simple arcade ports to more intricate designs.
You control a cursor to swap adjacent colored blocks, aiming to line up three or more of the same color to clear them from the screen. The main objective is to prevent the stack of blocks from reaching the top, which ends the game. Two key mechanics define the action: you can create chain reactions by clearing blocks that cause others to fall and match, and the game constantly pushes the entire stack of blocks upward, increasing the pressure. The pacing starts deceptively calm but quickly becomes frantic, demanding quick decisions and foresight. It feels like a constant, satisfying battle against a rising tide.
