About Operation Thunderbolt
Operation Thunderbolt came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed and published by Taito. It was part of that wave of action games that really pushed the 16-bit hardware, focusing on fast-paced combat and large, detailed environments. You see a lot of games from that period trying to create a cinematic feel, and this one was no exception.
You control a lone soldier, moving through enemy territory screen by screen. Your main goal is to rescue hostages while eliminating every enemy soldier in each area before you can proceed. The core mechanics are straightforward: you have a standard firearm with unlimited ammo, but you can pick up more powerful temporary weapons like a flamethrower or a rocket launcher. You also need to find and use keycards to open doors, which adds a small puzzle element to the straightforward shooting. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can be punishing if you are not careful with your positioning and weapon selection. It feels like a tense, methodical sweep through hostile grounds where a single mistake can force you to restart the entire stage.
