About On The Ball
On The Ball came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Taito. It was part of that early wave of SNES games that experimented with the console's Mode 7 scaling and rotation, trying to create a new kind of spatial puzzle. You don't control a character in the traditional sense; instead, you manipulate the entire playing field itself.
You guide a marble through a series of maze-like courses by tilting the board. The main objective is to navigate from the start to the exit without letting your marble fall into any gaps. Your primary tools are the direct tilt controls and a rewind function that lets you undo mistakes, which is essential because the courses get progressively more complex with moving platforms, narrow pathways, and obstacles. The pacing is deliberate, demanding careful adjustments rather than speed. It feels like solving a physical puzzle with your own hands, a surprisingly tactile experience for a video game.
