About Olympic Summer Games 96
Olympic Summer Games 96 came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996, developed by Black Pearl Software. It was one of those sports compilations that showed up late in the SNES lifecycle, right when everyone was starting to look at the next generation of consoles. You could tell it was trying to capture the energy of the Atlanta games, but on hardware that was already familiar and comfortable.
You control an athlete competing across ten different events, from the 100 meter dash to platform diving. The main goal is straightforward: win gold medals by outperforming the computer opponents. Each event uses its own control scheme; some rely on rapid button mashing for running and swimming, while others, like archery or shooting, require careful timing and precision. The difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially in events where the controls feel less responsive. Finishing first in a close race or nailing a perfect dive provides a genuine, if fleeting, sense of accomplishment.
