North and South is a historical strategy game released in 1990 for MS-DOS. It is based on the Belgian comic series "Les Tuniques Bleues" and is set during the American Civil War. Developed by Infogrames and published by Data East, the game allows players to command forces from either the Union or the Confederacy.

Players manage their war effort on a strategic map of the United States, divided into states and territories. The primary objective is to conquer enemy states by moving army units across the map. Progression involves expanding control westward into unoccupied land and capturing key locations such as forts and railway stations. When two opposing armies enter the same state, the conflict transitions from the strategic map to a real-time action sequence. These battles involve direct control of infantry and cavalry units in side-view engagements. Additional action sequences are triggered for specific objectives, including assaults on enemy forts or attempts to rob trains.

The game incorporates several systems for managing military strength. Armies can be reinforced through economic means, as controlling railway stations generates income which can be converted into new soldiers. An optional rule also provides periodic naval reinforcements to the player holding North Carolina. The strategic layer can be customized; players may choose to automate battles and missions, reducing the game to a randomized board game style where combat outcomes are determined by chance and army size. The game also includes a two-player mode, allowing direct competition between human opponents.
