Newman-Haas IndyCar Racing on SNES is one of those early '90s racing sims that tried to be serious but still had that arcadey feel. You get Nigel Mansell’s face plastered everywhere (because, well, it’s his game), and the handling’s weirdly stiff at first—like the cars are glued to the track until they suddenly aren’t. The tracks are flat and kinda basic, but there’s something satisfying about nailing the tight turns at Phoenix or trying not to wipe out at Michigan.
It’s not the prettiest racer, even for SNES, but the two-player mode is where it shines. My brother and I used to wreck each other on purpose just to hear that crunchy collision sound. If you’re into old-school racing games, it’s a neat time capsule, even if it hasn’t aged perfectly. Just don’t expect Gran Turismo levels of realism.
