Neugier came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Wolf Team. It was part of that wave of action RPGs on the system, games that tried to build big worlds within the console's limits. You don't hear about it as much as some others, but it had its own ideas.

You control a young man named Uta, exploring a cursed island from a top-down perspective. Your main goal is to find the four elemental crystals to break the island's curse. The game is built on screen by screen exploration; each new screen loads as you cross the border, which gives the world a deliberate, connected feel. Combat is straightforward, using your sword on enemies that appear directly on the map, and you can switch to a bow for ranged attacks. The dungeons are mazelike, requiring you to find keys and solve simple block-pushing puzzles. The pacing is slow, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with limited healing and save points. Playing it feels like a methodical, sometimes tense, crawl through a strange and isolated place.
