NHL '97 for the Super Nintendo came out in 1996, a time when the 16-bit system was still holding its own against newer consoles. EA Sports published it, and this European version, specifically the Rev A edition, was the one I spent a lot of time with. It was part of that late-era SNES sports lineup, a solid hockey option before everything moved fully into the 3D generation.

You control a five-man hockey team, switching between players to carry the puck up the ice, set up passes, and take shots on goal. The main objective is straightforward: outscore your opponent. A couple of its signature mechanics are the one-timer shot, which requires precise timing to execute as you pass and shoot in one motion, and the ability to make big, body-checking hits to separate opponents from the puck. The game has a faster pace than some earlier hockey titles, and the difficulty can spike, especially when the computer decides to apply relentless offensive pressure. It feels responsive and chaotic in the best way, capturing the flow of a real hockey game where a single mistake can lead to a goal against you.
