About Nhl '97 (europe)
NHL '97 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1996, a time when the 16-bit console was still holding its own. EA Sports published it, and this was their final NHL game for the SNES. It felt like a late-era release, a polished version of the hockey formula they had been refining for years on the platform.
You control a five-man unit on the ice, switching between players to chase the puck, set up plays, and take shots on goal. The main objective is to outscore your opponent, of course. A couple of its signature mechanics are the one-timer shot, which requires precise timing to execute, and the ability to make big, open-ice checks that send players flying. The game has a faster pace than some of its predecessors, and the difficulty can be punishing if you are not careful with your positioning. It feels responsive and chaotic in the best way, a solid hockey game that captures the speed of the sport.
