About Nhl '96 (europe)
NHL '96 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1995, a time when sports games were really finding their footing on the console. It was developed and published by EA Sports, a name that was becoming a standard for hockey games. This was one of the later hockey titles for the SNES, arriving when the 16-bit era was still going strong but the next generation of consoles was on the horizon.
You control a five man hockey team, switching between players to carry the puck up the ice, pass to open teammates, and take shots on goal. The main objective is simple: outscore your opponent. A few mechanics stand out, like the one timer pass for quick shots and the ability to make big, physical checks to separate opponents from the puck. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty can spike, especially when the computer decides to apply relentless offensive pressure. It feels responsive and chaotic in a way that captures the speed of real hockey.
