Mother 2—or EarthBound, if you grew up with the US version—is one of those weird, wonderful RPGs that sticks with you. You play as Ness, a kid with a baseball bat and psychic powers, fighting off aliens and weirdos in a world that feels like a mix of small-town America and pure surrealism. The battles are turn-based but quick, and the writing’s got this dry, offbeat humor that makes even random NPCs memorable.
At first glance, it looks simple—almost childish—but there’s something oddly deep about it. The soundtrack’s full of weird synths and catchy melodies, and the enemies range from possessed street signs to sentient piles of vomit. It’s the kind of game where you’ll be laughing one minute and then suddenly hit with a moment that feels strangely profound. If you’ve never played it, you’re missing out on one of the SNES’s most unique adventures.
