I first played Mother 2, known as EarthBound outside Japan, on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1994. It was developed by Ape Inc. and HAL Laboratory, and it stood out from other RPGs of that era. While many games featured fantasy castles and dragons, this one was set in a world that felt strangely familiar, like a slightly off version of our own.

You control a boy named Ness and a small group of friends, traveling across a large map from his suburban home to strange, psychedelic locations. Your main goal is to stop an alien invasion by defeating the entity Giygas. The combat is turn based, but it includes a unique rolling health meter; if you act quickly after being hit, you can heal before your health depletes completely. You explore the world screen by screen, talking to eccentric characters and using items like baseball bats and frying pans in battle. The pacing is deliberate, with moments of quiet exploration punctuated by sudden, difficult enemy encounters. Playing it feels like taking a long, weird road trip with your closest friends.
