Mortal Kombat Trilogy is a fighting game released in 1997 for the MS-DOS platform. Developed by Midway Games, Inc. and published by GT Interactive Software Corp., it is a compilation title that brings together characters and stages from the first three Mortal Kombat arcade games. The game presents its one-on-one martial arts combat from a side view perspective.

Players select one of over thirty characters, each possessing a unique fighting style and a set of special moves. The roster includes fighters from the entire series up to that point, such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Raiden, alongside bosses like Shao Kahn. The core objective is to defeat a series of opponents in consecutive matches, culminating in a final battle. Gameplay revolves around executing combinations, blocking, and using character-specific special moves to deplete an opponent's health bar. A key mechanical addition is the "Aggressor" bar, a meter that fills during a match and, when activated, temporarily enhances a character's speed and strength. The game also introduced the Brutality, a new type of finishing move achieved by inputting a long sequence of attacks that causes the defeated opponent to explode.

Progression follows the traditional arcade ladder structure, where the player fights through a sequence of opponents. A distinctive feature of Trilogy is its expanded character roster, which allows for match-ups not possible in the earlier individual titles, such as pitting different versions of the same character against one another. The stages are drawn from the entire series, incorporating environments from Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, and Mortal Kombat 3, including its updated version, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. The game maintains the fundamental combat mechanics of its predecessors while integrating these expanded elements into a single package.
