I remember picking up Mortal Kombat for the Super Nintendo in 1993, a version specifically for Europe with a Rev A on the label. It was published by Acclaim and developed by Midway, and it stood out immediately among the other fighters on the system. While other games used cartoonish sprites, this one had a different, more photographic look that made it feel distinct from its contemporaries.

You control one of several martial artists, like Scorpion or Sub-Zero, and your goal is to defeat a series of opponents in one-on-one combat to win the tournament. The fighting is straightforward; you punch, kick, and perform special moves by entering specific joystick and button combinations. Two of its most talked-about mechanics were the Fatalities, which were gruesome finishing moves you could perform after winning a match, and the ability to throw your opponent. The game was notoriously difficult, especially the later fights, and required precise timing to succeed. It feels raw and immediate, a direct test of your reflexes and memory for move sets.
