I remember getting my hands on the European beta of Mortal Kombat for the Super Nintendo. It was a version that never got a full release, and it felt like finding a piece of lost history. The game was developed by Midway and published by Acclaim, and on the SNES, it was part of that early 90s wave where fighting games were really finding their footing. You could tell they were pushing the hardware to do something new.

You pick a fighter from a roster of characters like Scorpion or Sub-Zero and face off against opponents in one-on-one battles. The main goal is to win a series of fights to progress through the tournament. The game's signature mechanics are its special moves, like Scorpion's spear, and the finishing moves known as Fatalities. These Fatalities were a big deal at the time; you input a specific button sequence after winning a match to perform a brutal, over-the-top move on your defeated opponent. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be punishing, especially as you get closer to the final boss. It feels raw and immediate, a direct test of your reflexes and memory for move inputs.
