I remember getting my hands on the European beta of Mortal Kombat 3 for the Super Nintendo. It was an unreleased version, so details were scarce, but it was developed by Midway and published by Acclaim. This was during the mid-90s when the SNES was still the center of our living rooms, and every new fighting game felt like a major event.

You control one of several fighters, like Sub-Zero or Sonya, and your goal is to defeat a series of opponents in one-on-one combat to progress through the tournament. The game introduced new mechanics, such as the run button for quick dashes and combos that could be dialed in for extended attacks. You also had to deal with the new Mercy system, where you could grant a defeated opponent a sliver of health for a chance at a more dramatic finish. The pacing was fast, and the computer opponents were notoriously difficult, often reading your inputs to counter your moves. It felt raw and unpolished compared to the final release, but that roughness gave it a certain brutal charm.
