Mortal Kombat 3 is a 2D fighting game released in 1995 for the MS-DOS platform. Developed by Midway Games and published by Atari, Inc., the title continues the arcade-style martial arts series. The game's narrative follows a scenario where the villain Shao Kahn has conquered Earthrealm, and a small group of surviving warriors must confront his forces to prevent total annihilation.

Players select one of several kombatants, including returning characters like Liu Kang and Sonya Blade alongside new additions such as Kabal and Stryker. The core objective is to defeat a series of opponents in one-on-one battles across various stages, culminating in confrontations with sub-bosses and the primary antagonist. Gameplay introduces several new systems, including a dedicated run button to increase movement speed and multi-level playfields that allow fighters to transition between different elevations of the same arena. The combat system also features expanded combo mechanics, referred to as "Dial-A-Combo," for stringing together attacks, and retains the series' signature finishing moves and stage-specific fatalities.

Progression is structured through traditional arcade ladders, where players face a sequence of CPU-controlled fighters. The PC version of the game included network play functionality, allowing for matches between two human players. Visually, the game continued the use of digitized sprites created from motion capture for its character models. Unlockable abilities, known through "Vs. codes," could be activated by both players entering specific sequences before a match, adding variety to the versus play experience.
