About Mizuki Shigeru No Youkai Hyakkiyakou (japan)

Mizuki Shigeru No Youkai Hyakkiyakou came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed by KSS. It was part of that wave of Japanese titles that never left the country, a board game adaptation based on the work of manga artist Shigeru Mizuki. On a console filled with action and RPGs, this was a different kind of experience, built around turn based movement and chance.

You control a single character, moving them space by space across a game board that feels like a haunted map of Japan. The main goal is to be the first to reach the final destination, but the path is littered with youkai, the supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore. Your turn involves rolling a die to move, then dealing with whatever space you land on; you might draw an event card, get into a simple battle resolved with a dice roll, or have a youkai block your path until you defeat it. The pacing is slow and deliberate, more about managing risk than quick reflexes, and the random events can make it surprisingly difficult. Playing it feels like a supernaturally charged game of chance, where a single unlucky roll can undo your progress.
