Maximum Carnage is one of those classic SNES beat 'em ups that feels like you're flipping through a comic book—because, well, you kinda are. You pick between Spider-Man or Venom (or unlock other heroes like Black Cat and Captain America) and just start brawling through waves of Carnage’s goons in a side-scrolling frenzy. The art style nails the comic vibe, with cutscenes ripped straight from the panels, and the soundtrack’s got that grungy Green Jelly energy, even if it sounds a little chiptune-y.
It’s not the deepest fighter—you’ll mostly be mashing buttons and tossing thugs off rooftops—but there’s something satisfying about the sheer chaos of it. Some of the enemy designs are wild, like Doppelganger and Demogoblin, and the difficulty spikes hard if you’re not careful. Still, it’s a solid time capsule of 90s Marvel madness. Just don’t expect a deep combo system or anything.
If you grew up with this one, the nostalgia hits hard. If not, it’s a fun relic, but maybe not the first SNES beat ‘em up I’d recommend to someone new to the genre.
