Mahjong Sengoku Monogatari is one of those weirdly specific SNES gems—a full-on mahjong game wrapped in a samurai-era skin. At first glance, it looks like any other tile-matching game, but then you notice the little details: the feudal Japan aesthetic, the way the tiles clack when you slide them, and the fact that every opponent is some overdramatic warlord judging your moves.

It’s surprisingly deep for a mid-'90s mahjong sim. The AI actually puts up a fight, and there’s this weirdly satisfying tension when you’re one tile away from a winning hand while some scowling daimyo across the table keeps stealing your best pieces. The music’s all shamisen and taiko drums, which either gets you hyped or makes you feel like you’re in a tense kabuki play—no in-between.

If you’re into mahjong, it’s a solid time capsule with personality. If you’re not, well… at least the warlords have hilarious facial expressions when they lose.
