Mahjong Gokuu Tenjiku on SNES is one of those weird, charming deep cuts—a mahjong game wrapped in a Journey to the West theme. You’ve got your usual tile-matching, but with these bizarre character portraits of Sun Wukong and pals staring at you the whole time. The backgrounds are surprisingly detailed for a mahjong game, all painted temples and drifting clouds.
At first, I thought it was just mahjong with a reskin, but there’s actually some strategy here—certain tile combos trigger special animations, and the AI doesn’t mess around. Took me a few rounds to stop losing embarrassingly fast. If you’re into retro puzzle games with personality, this one’s got it in spades. Just don’t expect the Monkey King to go easy on you.
