About Madou Monogatari
Madou Monogatari came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996, developed by Compile. It was part of that late SNES era when developers were still finding new ways to use the hardware, and this one is a first-person dungeon crawler that feels quite distinct from the more common action or RPG titles on the system.
You control a young wizard, Arle, navigating a multi-floor dungeon one square at a time. Your main goal is to climb the tower and confront the final boss, but the journey is filled with turn based battles against monsters. Instead of a sword, you cast elemental spells like Fire and Ice, managing your limited MP. The dungeon is explored screen by screen, with hidden passages and traps to discover. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you don't manage your resources carefully. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes tense puzzle where every spell cast matters.
