Super Mario World came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in North America, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of the games that defined the early years of the 16-bit console, building directly on the foundation set by its predecessors on the NES.

You control Mario, or Luigi for a second player, running and jumping through a large overworld map to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. The main objective is to traverse side-scrolling levels, from grassy plains to ghost houses and castles, to reach the goal. Signature mechanics include finding secret exits to unlock new paths on the map, which expands the game significantly, and using the new Cape Feather to fly and the Yoshi dinosaur, who can eat enemies and projectiles. The pacing is brisk, with hidden blocks and alternate routes encouraging exploration, and the difficulty gradually builds, especially in the later castles and special stages. It feels like a playground of possibilities where every jump can lead to a surprise.
