I first played The Lost Vikings on the Super Nintendo in 1993, a game developed by Silicon & Synapse, who would later become Blizzard. It was a time when platformers were everywhere, but this one stood apart by making you think more than you jumped.

You control three Vikings: Erik the Swift can run and jump, Baleog the Furious fights with a sword and bow, and Olaf the Stout blocks attacks with his shield and uses it to glide down from heights. Your main goal is to guide all three of them, one at a time, through each side-scrolling screen to the exit. The core of the game is switching between them to use their specific skills to solve environmental puzzles, like having Olaf create a platform for Erik to reach a high ledge, or using Baleog to shoot a switch from a distance. The pacing is deliberate; you often stop to figure out the correct sequence of actions, and the difficulty comes from managing all three characters and avoiding hazards. It feels like solving a series of intricate, cooperative locks where you hold all the keys.
