About Lost Vikings, The (beta)
I first played The Lost Vikings on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1992. It was developed by Silicon & Synapse, the company that would later become Blizzard. On a system filled with action platformers and RPGs, this game stood out for its methodical, puzzle focused approach.
You control three Vikings: Erik the Swift, Baleog the Fierce, and Olaf the Stout. Each has a specific skill. Erik can run fast and jump, Baleog fights with a sword and bow, and Olaf uses his shield to block attacks and create platforms. The goal is to guide all three characters safely through each side scrolling level, which often requires careful coordination and swapping between them to overcome obstacles. You explore screen by screen, hitting switches, avoiding enemies, and collecting keys to open doors. The pacing is slow and deliberate, demanding patience as you figure out the correct sequence of actions for all three characters to proceed. It feels like solving a complex, interactive logic problem where every mistake is your own.
