Live A Live is one of those weird, experimental RPGs Square cranked out in the SNES days—you know, before they got obsessed with cinematic cutscenes and belts. The whole thing’s split into these totally disconnected chapters where you jump between a caveman, a cowboy, a robot, and even a ninja sneaking through Edo-period Japan. Each one plays with RPG tropes in its own way—the prehistoric chapter has no dialogue, just grunts and gestures, while the mech pilot’s story feels like a cheesy anime episode.
Combat’s turn-based but on a grid, so positioning actually matters. Some chapters are short and punchy, others drag a little, but the way they all click together at the end? That’s where the magic happens. Just don’t expect a traditional JRPG—this thing’s more like a bizarre anthology that somehow works.
