About Last Action Hero
I remember picking up Last Action Hero for the Super Nintendo back in 1993. It was published by Sony Imagesoft, and it came out right when movie tie-in games were everywhere on the system. You play as Jack Slater, Arnold Schwarzenegger's character from the film, and the game follows the movie's plot of a kid who gets pulled into an action movie world.
You control Jack through side-scrolling levels, moving screen by screen and punching or shooting thugs with your machine gun. Your main goal is to stop the villain, Benedict, from using a magical ticket to enter the real world. The gameplay involves a lot of straightforward combat, platforming across city rooftops and movie sets, and finding keys to unlock doors. Some levels switch to an overhead driving perspective where you shoot at pursuing cars. The game moves at a quick pace, but the controls can feel a bit stiff, and the difficulty spikes in later stages can be frustrating. Playing it feels like a straightforward, sometimes clunky, attempt to capture a blockbuster movie's energy in a 16-bit format.
