Kaite Tsukutte Asoberu Dezaemon came out in 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan, published by Bullet-Proof Software. It was a late release for the SNES, a time when players were starting to look toward newer consoles, but it offered something different from the typical platformers and RPGs of the era.

You control a small spaceship, moving it to dodge enemy fire and shooting back to clear the screen of foes. The main objective is to survive through levels you design yourself. The game's signature mechanics are its creation tools; you can draw your own sprites for ships and enemies, compose background music, and build entire stages from scratch. After building a level, you immediately switch to playing it, testing your design against your own bullets and patterns. The pacing is entirely up to you, since you set the enemy numbers and attack waves, which can lead to brutally difficult stages or more relaxed, experimental ones. It feels like having a toy box full of shooter parts that you can assemble and play with on the spot.
