Okay, so Jungle No Ouja Tar-chan is one of those weirdly charming SNES games that feels like someone threw a Saturday morning cartoon into a beat-em-up. You play as Tar-chan, this little jungle dude who punches monkeys, rides ostriches (yes, really), and occasionally gets launched out of cannons. The controls are janky in that classic 90s way—like, you’ll miss a jump because the hitbox on that vine swing is just slightly off—but there’s something weirdly satisfying about clobbering crocodiles with your tiny fists.
The levels are short and chaotic, with these bright, cluttered backgrounds that make it hard to tell what’s scenery and what’s about to attack you. I kept getting ambushed by snakes popping out of bushes, which, honestly, feels pretty on-brand for a jungle adventure. The music’s got that upbeat SNES synth thing going on, all bongos and chirpy melodies, like you’re trapped in a tropical theme park.
It’s not deep, but it’s the kind of game you’d rent as a kid and play through in one sitting, laughing at how ridiculous it all is. If you’re into obscure retro oddities, this one’s a trip.
