Joe & Mac came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Data East. It was part of that early wave of SNES games, a time when side scrolling action was a dominant format. You control one of two cavemen, Joe or Mac, on a quest to rescue cavewomen kidnapped by a rival tribe of neanderthals.

You move through levels screen by screen, using primitive weapons like bones and stone wheels to defeat dinosaurs and other prehistoric enemies. The main objective is straightforward: fight from the start of each stage to the end, defeating a boss to progress. A signature mechanic is finding and using better weapons, like a fireball shooting club, which you can upgrade by collecting power ups. Another key element is the cooperative two player mode, allowing you and a friend to play through the adventure together. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty can spike sharply, especially during boss encounters. It feels like a chaotic, cooperative scramble through a cartoon version of the stone age.
