J.r.r. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings - Volume One Game
📅 1994 ✍️ Interplay Productions

Okay, so this is the SNES take on The Lord of the Rings, and it’s… well, it’s definitely a product of its time. You start off as Frodo (obviously), wandering around the Shire in that classic 16-bit top-down style, talking to hobbits who all sound suspiciously similar. The sprites are charmingly chunky, and the music’s got that SNES synth-orchestra thing going—kinda nostalgic, honestly.
Combat’s turn-based, which feels a little slow now, but back then it was pretty standard. You’ll recruit the usual Fellowship suspects—Gandalf’s OP, Aragorn hits hard, and Merry and Pippin are basically there to get knocked out. The translation’s a bit rough in places (thanks, early ‘90s localization), and some of the puzzles are cryptic as hell. Like, why does this random hobbit need a mushroom to tell me where to go?
It loosely follows the books, but don’t expect deep lore—just a lot of fighting orcs, dodging Ringwraiths, and occasionally getting wrecked by the Balrog because you didn’t grind enough. Not the best LOTR game out there, but if you’re into retro RPGs, it’s a fun little time capsule.
