Illusion of Time came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Quintet. It was part of that wave of ambitious action-RPGs that tried to push the 16-bit hardware with deeper stories and more involved worlds. You don't see many games from that era with its particular mix of fantasy and a slightly more grounded, personal narrative.

You control a boy named Will, traveling across the world to prevent a comet from colliding with the planet. The exploration is screen by screen, with areas that slowly unlock as you gain new abilities. A key mechanic is using magical rings you find, each granting a different power like creating a gust of wind or forming a block of ice to solve environmental puzzles. Combat is straightforward, mostly involving your sword against the creatures you meet, but the pacing is deliberate, focused more on traversal and figuring out how to progress. The difficulty comes from navigating the sometimes maze-like locations and managing your resources carefully. Playing it feels like slowly unraveling a long and solitary journey, where each new item opens up a part of the map you had previously seen but couldn't reach.
