Haou Taikei Ryuu Knight is one of those SNES RPGs that flew under the radar outside Japan, which is a shame because it's got this weird, cool mix of fantasy and mecha. You start off as this knight who eventually bonds with a dragon—except the dragon turns into this badass armored suit? Yeah, it's as anime as it sounds.
The combat's turn-based but with a twist: positioning actually matters, so you're constantly shuffling your party around the grid to avoid getting wrecked by AoE attacks. First time I played, I got wiped because I clumped everyone together like an idiot. The sprite work's gorgeous though, especially the dragon armor transformations—still holds up.
Fair warning: no official English release, so you'll need a translation patch unless you're cool with menu-guessing. Worth the hassle if you dig obscure 90s JRPGs with bizarre premises.
