I first played Gunforce on the Super Nintendo back in 1992, a time when the console was full of side-scrolling action games. It was developed by Irem, the same company known for the R-Type series, which gave me some idea of what to expect. This was not a game trying to reinvent the wheel, but it offered a specific kind of military-themed run and gun experience that felt right at home on the system.

You control a lone soldier, moving from left to right through enemy-infested industrial and outdoor zones. Your main goal is simply to survive each stage, blasting through waves of soldiers, robots, and vehicles. The signature mechanics are straightforward: you can fire in eight directions, which was a nice step up from many other shooters at the time, and you frequently get to pilot different vehicles, like a small mech or a helicopter, to clear out tougher sections. The pacing is relentless, with enemies spawning constantly, and the difficulty is unapologetic, demanding quick reflexes and smart weapon selection. Playing it feels like a constant, chaotic firefight where you are always just a few mistakes away from a game over.
